报告摘要:
Engineered materials, nano or otherwise, have greatly aided the advancement of life science research. The ability to tune the physicochemical properties of materials, so as to achieve desired modulation of a specific biological process, is critically important. In this talk I will present three case studies, in which we successfully implemented materials engineering principles for autophagy research. In the first example, a surface-coating peptide, discovered through phage display, was used to control whether and how much autophagy can be induced by rare earth nanoparticles in cancer cells. In the second scenario, we engineered a special Cu-Pd alloy nanomaterial with a particular shape and composition, which elicited pro-survival autophagy and enabled optimized photothermal therapy of drug-resistant cancer when combined with an autophagy inhibitor. And finally, I will briefly describe our unpublished work, in which we leverage the AIE principle for achieving transfection-free flow cytometric sorting of live and functionally-competent cells that differ in the autophagy level. For a biologist with little training in chemistry, the rendezvous with materials science has been mind-boggling and, at the same time, fulfilling.
