Abstract:
Polycrystalline materials show complex responses when structure-sensitive reactions are addressed. To understand the origin of the different contributions and design more electrocatalytic materials, models are required. The best experimental model to approach Pt(poly), including nanoparticles, is single crystal reactivity. The surfaces are uniform and a limited, well-known number of sites are involved. In this way, conclusions on site reactivity are easily reached, particularly when series of stepped surfaces are used. Examples on the use of single crystals to characterize Pt nanoparticles and its reactivity will be discussed.
