Abstract:
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an emerging vibrational spectroscopic technique with numerous analytical, biophysical and life science applications[1]. In addition to normal Raman spectroscopy, SERS requires plasmonically active materials, for instance noble metal colloids which support localized surface plasmon resonances. This lecture gives an overview on the rational design and synthesis of functionalized noble metal colloids for bionanalytical and chemical applications of SERS. After a brief introduction on the theoretical foundations of SERS, three different topics from across the chemical sciences with results from the author’s laboratories will be covered:
1.) Immuno-SERS microscopy for tissue-based tumor diagnostics [2-3],
2.) Solid-phase synthesis with integrated SERS analysis [4-5], and
3.) Label-free monitoring of Pt- and Au-catalyzed reactions by SERS [6,7].
In all three cases tailor-made plasmonic nanostructures play a key role.
